NEW YORK (AP) — Two sparkly golden trophies gleam behind Tamron Hall on the set of her nationally syndicated talk show. But despite entering its fourth season, the “Tamron Hall” show is not a well-oiled machine — and that’s intentional.

“The only thing that shines in this room are the Emmys. I want this show to evolve. And if it’s well-oiled, I believe that you’re not looking under the hood,” said the host who recently took home her second outstanding informative talk show host Emmy. Hall said she wants to make sure the show is “talking about what you’re talking about.”

Lawsuits filed to stop the removal of memorials to Confederate leaders and a pro-slavery congressman in a South Carolina city have been dropped. The Post and Courier reports that the American Heritage Association helped fund one of the lawsuits. It had been filed by descendants of John C. Calhoun, a former congressman and vice president who died before the Civil War. The suit had opposed the city of Charleston’s removal of Calhoun’s statue. Another suit opposed the removal of a Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway marker in Charleston, and the renaming of an auditorium that had been named after a treasury secretary of the Confederacy.

A Michigan man’s 2019 second-degree murder conviction has been overturned by an appeals court that determined the man’s attorney ignored his wishes to admit that he pulled the trigger. In a ruling last week, the Michigan Court of Appeals said 28-year-old Reinaldo Jamison had wanted to argue in court that he fatally shot Andre Fort in in 2018 in self defense but that attorney David Cripps decided to argue in court that Jamison was not the gunman. The Detroit Free Press reports that prosecutors have not yet decided to appeal with the state's supreme court, try the case again or drop the charges.

World leaders are gathering at the United Nations this week under the shadow of Europe’s first major conflict since World War II. Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the fighting it produced has sparked a global food crisis and a division among major powers not seen since the Cold War at a time of increasing international turbulence. The many facets of the war in Ukraine are expected to dominate the annual General Assembly meeting. It is taking place as many countries across the globe are also confronting inequality, an escalating climate crisis, the threat of multiple famines and increasing misinformation and hate speech.

The Spanish charity Open Arms has rescued 372 people seeking to cross the central Mediterranean Sea to Europe in unseaworthy boats in three operations. It has also recovered the corpse of a migrant who had been shot by smugglers. Open Arms spokeswoman Laura Lanuza said Sunday the ship remains at sea and is seeking a safe port for the rescued people, some of whom need medical care. Many of those rescued are also suffering dehydration after days at sea. In the largest rescue, the Open Arms picked up 294 people, mostly Egyptians, from an overcrowded barge south of Malta in an operation that spanned five hours.

A conservative anti-LGBTQ group has marched in Istanbul to defend what they described as traditional family values. The event was seen as the largest demonstration of its kind in Turkey. Several thousand people joined the “The Big Family Gathering” to demand that LGBTQ propaganda be banned and associations shuttered. Ahead of Sunday’s demonstration, the organizers circulated a video using images from past LGBTQ Prides in Turkey, calling on viewers to join the movement against the “virus” of global gay and trans propaganda. The video and the demonstration prompted outcry from LGBTQ associations and other rights groups, which say Turkey is obligated to protect all citizens from hate speech and violence.

At least a dozen of the playoff drivers had some sort of problem with NASCAR’s new Next Gen car Saturday night at Bristol. The spec car that has leveled the playing field was exposed for myriad durability issues that have followed it in its entire debut season. The Ford camp suffered a rash of blown tires, Toyota was plagued by power steering failures, drivers racing for the win were knocked from contention for any number of mechanical gremlins and passing was a most difficult task. Now NASCAR is facing an entire new set of questions about its new car.

Tennessee defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons practiced regularly against left guard Rodger Saffold since the Titans drafted him in 2019. Now Simmons gets his first chance at Saffold able to go full speed Monday night when the Titans visit Buffalo with Saffold in his first season with the Bills. Simmons says they had great battles in practice when he couldn't go after the quarterback. This isn’t the first time Saffold has faced his former teammates. Buffalo and Tennessee are not in the same division as they prepare to meet for a fifth straight year. They know each other almost as well as if they did play twice a season.

Walking off the field at Brentford’s small stadium in west London had a very different feel for Arsenal this time around. A straightforward 3-0 win at the 17,000-seat Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday retained Arsenal’s spot atop the Premier League table and made it six victories in seven games for Mikel Arteta’s side. It's quite a contrast from a year ago when Arsenal opened the season with a humbling 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Brentford. Everton earned its first win of the campaign by beating fellow struggler West Ham 1-0.

A watchdog group has determined that some census takers who falsified information during the 2020 census didn’t have their work redone fully, weren’t fired in a timely manner and in some cases even received bonuses. The report by the U.S. Commerce Department's Office of Inspector General raises concerns about possible damage to the quality of the once-a-decade head count that determines political power and federal funding. The report released Friday also says that off-campus students at colleges and universities were likely undercounted since the census started around the same time students were sent home to stop the spread of COVID-19 in March 2020.

The Saints have scratched top running back Alvin Kamara from the lineup against Tampa Bay because of a rib injury that has bothered him since New Orleans’ Week 1 victory at Atlanta. Kamara is one of the New Orleans’ most productive players as both a runner and receiver. But after practicing on a limited basis on Wednesday, he missed practice on Thursday and Friday and was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report. Kamara is among several established skill players ruled out for the game, including Tampa Bay receivers Julio Jones and Chris Godwin. Receiver Tre’Quan Smith is out for New Orleans.

The manager for the rapper Ludacris faces a murder charge in Atlanta in connection with a June shooting. Police reports show that Chaka Zulu, whose legal name is Ahmed Obafemi, turned himself in to face charges Tuesday. Atlanta news outlets report that he was released on bail the same day.  Gabe Banks, a lawyer for the longtime music executive, issued a statement expressing disappointment in the decision to bring charges against Zulu, who was wounded in the incident. Banks said evidence clearly shows Zulu defended himself while being attacked by at least four other people in the June incident.

Everton finally earned its first win of the Premier League season after Neal Maupay’s goal was enough to beat West Ham 1-0 on Sunday. It was Maupay’s first goal for Everton after joining from Brighton in the offseason and came in the 53rd minute with a clinical finish at Goodison Park. The Frenchman collected a pass from Alex Iwobi on the edge of the area, controlled the ball with one touch and then volleyed in a low shot inside the near post. The win lifts Everton to 13th place with seven points, while West Ham is in 18th on four points.
