The scrap tire amnesty day that White County conducted last Saturday was a huge success, according to organizers.

“We collected 845 tires from communities across White County,” says public works director Derick Canupp. “These tires will be transported to a recycling facility that will convert them back into raw materials that will be used to produce other goods.”

Canupp said some of the types of products made with recycled tires are molded rubber goods, flooring, rubberized asphalt, athletic surfaces, and landscape mulch.

According to Canupp, the scrap tire amnesty day project cost $15,000. It was funded through a grant the county obtained from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Canupp expresses his gratitude to those who brought tires and to the White County Road Department. Because the event was so successful, Canupp says his department will work to obtain funding for another scrap tire amnesty day next year.
