The Haryana Shahri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has asked the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to vacate the city’s first samadhan hub because the corporation failed to seek permission before developing the waste recycling facility. According to officials, the project was constructed on a two-acre land owned by HSVP in Sushant Lok 1.

HSVP discovered last week that its ₹ 300-crore land has made way for the hub without approval. The MCG opened the hub in February 2019, in a partnership with a NGO called I am Gurgaon, which is responsible for its day-to-day operations. People can dump segregated dry waste, such as glass, metal, e-waste, paper, solid and soft plastics, expired medicines, and multilayered plastic (MLP) at the hub. Separate garbage bins are provided for each kind of dry waste.

HSVP officials visited the hub last week for site inspection. They said that the civic body had earmarked the site for constructing a shopping centre only to discover that a recycling hub had come up on it.

“HSVP has issued a letter to the MCG on the matter asking them to vacate the premises. The two government bodies will work together to come up with a solution on the issue and accordingly, the next step will be initiated,” said Sanjiv Singla, estate officer, HSVP.

According to I am Gurgaon NGO members, 8,280kg of dry waste was segregated at the hub last year, including 3,720kg paper, 1,783 kg glass, 1,365kg hard plastic, 773kg e-waste, 330kg metal, 253kg soft plastic, and 56kg expired medicine.

“We have not received any information on the matter from either the MCG or HSVP. The hub is operating as usual,” said Anjali Khatri, core member, I am Gurgaon.

MCG has opened two more recycling hubs near DLF Phase 1 and Badshahpur.

“We will verify the land details and communicate with HSVP on the matter. There have been several such instances in the past where HSVP has occupied MCG land or vice versa. In some cases, the government has also allotted the same land to both government bodies. The entire issue will be resolved amicably,” said a senior MCG official.

The official further said that samadhaan hubs are important in segregating dry waste and reducing the total amount of waste that is dumped at the overburdened Bandhwari landfill. Hence, the MCG will work towards finding a solution for resolving the matter swiftly.

Besides samadhaan hubs, MCG has waste material recovery facilities (MRFs) at Badshahpur and Beriwala Bagh.
