A mum in Western Australia has shared the ultimate hack to clean the washing machine drawer, which is a key place it could easily harbour mould.

Have you noticed a certain smell coming from your washing machine? Think you’ve already cleaned everything you can?

Well, a mum in Western Australia has gone viral for a cleaning hack for the washing machine that will literally blow your mind. Perth-based Carolina McCauley actually cleans out her washing machine drawer every three weeks to prevent mould from growing.

Yep, you know that little pull-out where you put the detergent? When was the last time you thought to clean it? It makes a lot of sense given that mould likes to grow in places that are damp and warm.

'Did you know your washing machine tray is probably mouldy? Remove and clean it every three weeks to prevent this from happening,' Carolina said in TikTok video.

While we may already pat ourselves on the back for cleansing the rubber seal and leaving the door open so the machine can dry out, the discovery of this part of the machine was a revelation.

In the video McCauley simply pulls out the detergent tray entirely from it’s location at the top of the washing machine, revealing two parts – the tray and the hole it goes in.

She takes the tray over to her sink and cleans it with detergent, using a little toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies and make sure it is definitely free from mould.

She also takes the time to wipe out the hole the tray goes in, taking the toothbrush again to manage all the detail work.

Then she simply slides the tray back in and she’s good to go.

Users took to the comments to share small additions to her hack.

“Always open the drawer and the door of my washing machine it is in my bathroom and NO mould,” one user commented.

“Remove the tray after every use and flip it upside down and put in the actual machine and leave the door open,” another suggested.

Don’t worry McCauley was not about to stop there. Following the success of the washing machine drawer TikTok she also decided to cover the washing machine filter, which is surprisingly easy to clean.

“When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine filter?” she asked. “Washing machine filters trap everything from lint to loose hairs and if not cleaned properly mould and spores can get into your clothes.”

This will likely vary depending on your model and instructions, so look into it for your specific washing machine.

However, in the video, McCauley simply opens the little door at the bottom of the washing machine and opens the plug and allows some of the water to drain.

She takes the plug to the sink and cleans thoroughly with detergent, while she uses a spray and a cloth to clean inside the filter hole.
