Fairfield takes new approach to recycling events with Discard Day

FAIRFIELD, Ohio – Unneeded items along with junk or debris can be disposed of as part of Fairfield’s inaugural Discard Day.

“This is popular in other communities,’’ said Sami Brandenburg, the city’s neighborhood development manager.“We didn’t want it to be just about dumpsters. We’re adding a sustainability element, which would speak to our residents.’

Brandenburg said the new approach should eliminate residents making multiple trips to multiple locations to get rid of items that they no longer want or use.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 22, items can be brought to the Fairfield Aquatic Center, 2605 Augusta Blvd.Four partnerships will allow for items to be reused, recycled, or otherwise disposed of or discarded.

Goodwill Industries and Habit for Humanity Restore will have trucks for items that can be sold in their stores. Junk King of Cincinnati will sort items placed in dumpsters so that as many as possible are reused, recycled or donated. And representatives of the Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District will direct people to sites where certain items that won’t be accepted by the other partners can be disposed of safely.
