he European Recycling Industries Federation (EuRIC), the Spanish Federation for Recovery and Recycling (FER) and the Collective Management System for End-of-Life Tyres in Spain (SIGNUS) have warned of the significant consequences of the European Commission proposal to ban the use of materials from tyres at the end of their useful life (rubber crumb) on artificial turf pitches, without taking into account other equally efficient measures with less environmental impact.

EURIC, FER and SIGNUS Respond to Proposed Ban

In Europe, around 150 million tyres are processed for recycling each year, which is one tyre for every three citizens of the European Union. This rubber from recycled tyres has a wide range of practical uses, such as essential materials for artificial turf used in football pitches, playgrounds and its use in road construction.

EuRIC Believes that the ECHA RAC Microplastics Guidance is Incorrect

From tyres to football pitches. Why the microplastics ban misses the mark on the EU’s circular economy. The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) strongly rejects an EU proposal that will indirectly ban materials from tyres as part of its effort to eradicate microplastics. The matter is to be discussed by the European Commission on the 23rd September 2022, and the final outcome will be known by the year-end, but currently, the prognosis is not good for crumb rubber infill. Each year...

Neusus And the Recircle Award Trophies

When the Recircle Awards were looking for trophies, it decided that rather than the ubiquitous engraved glass plaque, there was a need for something that reflected the nature of the Awards, and that was when Neusus stepped in. Neusus is a Spanish company that uses recycled tyre crumb to create furniture and artworks from end-of-life tyres. The design of this trophy created by Neusus has its origin in the Neo-Futurist architecture of the beginning of the century, which seeks to break with the vertical linearity...

Spanish Study into Microplastic from Artificial Turf

The Spanish tyre sector sees 300,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres managed annually, of which approximately 75,000 tonnes are used as infill for artificial turf pitches. The European Commission is currently considering a proposal for restricting the use of intentionally added microplastics to the environment. Possible restrictions include the application of recycled rubber from end-of-life-tyres in this application, as the particle size added to artificial turf pitches is between 0.8 and 2.5 mm. The European Commissio...

Phoenix Industries Demonstrates New Pelletized Rubber Modified Binder

Phoenix Industries has announced the successful completion of the first trial project with their PelletPAVE™ pelletized rubber modified binder. Approximately 150 mix tons of the rubber modified hot mix asphalt was produced and placed in Pahrump, Nevada. PelletPAVE is a high rubber content, concentrate additive that when mixed with a base paving oil such as a PG64 -22 produces a modified binder typically with properties equal to or better than a SBS polymer modified PG76 -22. Dr. Serji Amirkhanian,...
